Dowland’s solo lute music is extraordinarily varied and ranges from light frivolous pieces to profound works expressing the darkest melancholy. It is characterized by an uncommon tunefulness and many of the pieces were given texts to become lute songs, one example being his famous pavan Lachrimæ which he also published as the song Flow my teares. It was included in Dowland's First Booke of Songes or Ayres, which appeared in 1597.

With previous lute experience only from Sting's 'Songs from the Labyrinth' this boxed set of lute music by John Dowland has opened up a whole new world of Pavans, Galliards, Almains, Fancyes, and Fantasies. Nigel North, Lutenist for over 30 years, brings this music to life. Bearing in mind the duration of Dowland’s lute playing career, from c.1570 to 1626, and the changes in instruments, strings, and playing techniques which took place during that time, there is no single “Dowland lute” which we can confidently say is the “correct” instrument with which to play his music. circumstances, Dowland’s style has to be regarded as something as yet ill-defined if not virtually unknown. The first step, then, was to establish, by means of a fresh look at the sources and the historical context, a canon of Dowland lute solos--to identify, that is, the quite small group of lute solos that are not only Dowland’s Lutes. It is still widely believed that to play Dowland one needs an eight-course lute tuned in unisons throughout.
